“Quintessentially Dappled”

“Quintessentially Dappled” is a print inspired by the enigmatic grey draft horses depicted in pre-industrial artworks of English and Irish horse fairs. Their captivating coats were revered by artists of that era, serving as inspiration for the play between light and detail. While their precise breed remains a mystery, it is believed they may be England’s native Dales Pony: a hardy type once favoured for their use both in mining and in the battlefield, which resulted in the breed coming close to extinction. Elizabeth skilfully honours the timeless elegance of this horse from a bygone era by juxtaposing loose brushstrokes with finessed detail — highlighting the intricate pattern of the horse’s coat.
